Finance has always been a very popular field for graduates, which means it can be difficult to land your dream career straight away.
If you’re currently studying for a finance degree, with hopes of getting a job once you graduate, you may have already started to think about how you can make your resume more attractive to recruiters.
You’ll be competing against many of your peers to get your perfect graduate job, so it’s important that you’re able to showcase some of the most important financial skills that recruiters are looking for.
In this article, we’ll be taking you through some of the most common skills that financial companies are looking for in their potential employees. If you don’t have all these skills yet, there’s no need to panic, as we’ll also be sharing how you can start to develop them before you graduate.
Financial skills every employer looks for
You may think that possessing a finance-related degree is enough to convince an employer that you have all the necessary skills for a job. However, you may have to take further steps to demonstrate your abilities.
Here are some of the skills you may – or may not – have that you should definitely include on your resume if you want to land your dream job.
1. Accounting skills
It doesn’t matter if you’re applying to be an accountant or a financial analyst, having some accountancy skills is important to many employers.
It’s important for finance graduates to be able to read and understand financial documents such as balance sheets, annual reports and cash flow statements, as these are essential sources of information for a range of departments.
Financial documents are good indicators of a company’s health and can help you to identify areas in which to save money, or where future profits should be allocated.
2. Analytical thinking
When you’re working in the finance industry, you’ll spend a lot of time working with numbers and reports. It isn’t enough to just take in all the information, you also need to know how to analyze the figures to better understand the performance of your company.
At university, you’ll likely learn about some important performance metrics that you can use to analyze financial data: quick ratios, current ratios and debt-to-equity ratios, for example, which will help you to leverage the information that you need in an effective way.
.
3. The ability to identify financial trends
The financial industry has undergone changes in recent years. If you’re able to show employers that you keep up to date with current information, and can identify new opportunities or trends, you could be a real asset to a company.
Factors such as cryptocurrency, blockchain, and fluctuations in the stock markets, can all cause significant changes in the industry. Being able to identify these changes and adapt accordingly to benefit from them is something that all businesses aim to do.
In your resume, you should talk about times when you have used your own initiative to embrace a trend or identify a new opportunity that has been a success.
4. Management and teamworking skills
Although not directly related to finance, management and teamworking skills are important in any role that you choose to apply for when you graduate.
Many employers want someone who is able to use their own initiative and manage other employees to be successful. But it’s also important for individuals to be able to work well with others, and to be comfortable taking orders from other team members when necessary.
Showing that you’re able to excel in both independent and team-based work indicates that you’re able to fit into a company well and bring benefits to the organization.
5. Investing
Having investment skills doesn’t just mean that you’re able to identify which stocks will be worth more in the long term – it also shows that you have a good attitude towards risk and reward.
If you can show a company that you’re experienced in taking calculated risks, and can minimize the possibility of losing profits or resources, you’re showing that you have a very important set of skills.
Knowing how to allocate money and resources is an important skill, as it could mean the difference between your company generating additional profit or losing capital.
6. Decision-making and problem-solving skills
Finally, the remaining skills that many employers look for in finance graduates are decision-making and problem-solving expertise.
When you’re working in a finance-related role, you’ll need to be able to use information and financial data to inform your decisions. Making the wrong choice can cause issues for your company, so showing that you can make the right decision based on the available figures is an extremely important skill.
Data can create a clear framework for your decisions, and can be trusted by your managers and other senior figures in the company. Being able to make the right call and advise other people in the business on the correct next step is extremely beneficial and, if you’re able to do this, you should always include it in your CV.
